2025 Comrades Marathon Set to Break Records with 22,000+ Entries and Enhanced Safety

The 2025 Comrades Marathon, the world’s largest ultramarathon, is set to take place with over 22,000 participants registered, according to General Manager Alain Dalais. Scheduled for June 4, the race will run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, featuring a revamped finish on Masabalala Yengwa Avenue to enhance runner safety. This edition promises significant economic benefits, including job creation and full hotel bookings.

Record Participation at the 2025 Comrades Marathon

This year marks a significant milestone with over 22,000 entries reported for the 2025 Comrades Marathon. General Manager Alain Dalais emphasized, “We have the largest field ever for this down run.”

The opening group has been capped at 14,000 runners to maintain a manageable start. This strategic decision reflects the event’s commitment to runner safety and overall experience enhancement.

The Comrades Marathon remains the oldest and largest ultramarathon globally. The previous down-run in 2018 had only 19,047 participants, showing substantial growth this year.

Enhanced Safety Measures and Local Impact

To ensure runner safety, an astro-turf mat has been introduced at the finish line. Dalais noted this change aims to protect those who might collapse during the final stretch.

With the event attracting thousands, security measures have been significantly intensified. Over 444 police officers will patrol the 98 km route to ensure participant and spectator safety.

Local businesses are already feeling the economic boost, with hotels fully booked across Durban and Pietermaritzburg. COO Jackie Motsepe stated, “We anticipate over 600,000 in economic impact from this race.”

The 2025 Comrades Marathon has kicked off with over 22,000 excited participants, marking a historic moment with the largest ever down-run entries. Enhanced safety measures, a new street finish, and significant economic impacts highlight the race’s monumental significance.
