Aguerd’s Brilliant Strike Secures Marseille’s Iconic Victory Over PSG in Le Classique

Aguerd's Stunning Goal Heals Old Wounds as Marseille Triumphs Over PSG in Le Classique
Marseille achieved their seventh consecutive Ligue 1 victory at home for the first time in over a decade, defeating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 and ending the champions’ flawless start to the season, as reported by Softfootball.

Originally scheduled for a different time, the match was pushed back by nearly 24 hours due to poor weather. Marseille took the lead quickly, just four minutes in. A corner by Mason Greenwood was cleared by Lucas Chevalier, but PSG failed to fully defend their goal. This allowed Greenwood to set up a pass to the far post.

The goal had a touch of luck, as a deflection off Willian Pacho permitted Nayef Aguerd to score with a header, although Chevalier could have done better to prevent the goal.

The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, but PSG gradually found their rhythm. Marseille’s captain, Leonardo Balerdi, escaped punishment after a couple of mistakes. Vitinha created PSG’s first real chance in the 17th minute, forcing a save from Gerónimo Rulli, but there were few threats on the Marseille goal until halftime.

PSG nearly doubled their deficit when Amine Gouiri struck the crossbar during a swift counter, and a subsequent effort by Emerson Palmieri was disallowed for offside. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia then fired a wide effort in response.

After the break, PSG maintained possession without creating many clear chances. Rulli’s save from a low shot by Achraf Hakimi was one of the few moments of excitement, while another attempt from Vitinha posed a minor threat, indicating that Marseille’s defense was effectively compact.

As PSG struggled, there was some off-the-field news to celebrate. The club announced through their team’s X handle that Head Coach Luis Enrique was awarded Men’s Coach of the Year during the ongoing Ballon d’Or ceremony, as seen in the confirmation post below;

With injuries sidelining Bradley Barcola, João Neves, Désire Doué, and Ousmane Dembélé, Enrique introduced substitutes Lee Kang-in and teenager Senny Mayulu in hopes of turning the tide. Meanwhile, Greenwood had a chance to secure the win in the 81st minute but failed to control the ball, and substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s penalty appeal was denied, along with a stop from Chevalier in stoppage time.

In a heated conclusion to the match, referee Jérôme Brisard dismissed Roberto De Zerbi, the opposing manager, for unsportsmanlike conduct. Despite the late drama, Marseille held firm to claim their first win in the last ten league meetings with PSG, climbing to sixth in the standings.
