Ngizwe Mchunu Faces SAHRC Scrutiny Following Controversial Anti-LGBTQIA+ Remarks

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has acknowledged that it is looking into Ngizwe Mchunu, a figure from the KwaZulu-Natal media scene, following numerous complaints related to his remarks on the LGBTQIA+ community.

A former presenter at Ukhozi FM, Mchunu provoked significant backlash on social platforms after sharing a video where he commented on the wedding of Simon Seun Nhlapo and Crosby Jodwana, which took place on 27 September 2025.

In the video, he condemned the couple’s union and made derogatory comments about the LGBTQIA+ community, resulting in public outcry.

The SAHRC, in a statement released on Thursday, 2 October, disclosed that it had received formal grievances from both individuals and organizations.

“The Commission confirms that it has received complaints from aggrieved members of the public and civil society organisations regarding these alleged offensive remarks. The Commission is registering the complaints and will assess them in line with the Commission’s Complaints Handling Procedure. The Commission will communicate the outcome of the assessment of the complaints in due course,” the statement read.

Many users on social media expressed their approval for the commission’s involvement, urging that serious measures should be taken against Mchunu.

He now joins the ranks of Nota Baloyi and Gayton McKenzie, who have similarly faced scrutiny from the SAHRC for their provocative statements in the past.
