KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has spoken about the details surrounding DJ Sumbody’s murder, reaffirming the police’s position on the investigation.
Authorities made significant progress in DJ Sumbody’s murder inquiry, leading to the arrest of Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe. Although DJ Sumbody’s relatives have dismissed claims regarding a possible drug motive, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi clarified the series of events that resulted in DJ Sumbody’s death.
In a recent session before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on October 8, 2025, Mkhwanazi responded to Julius Malema’s inquiry regarding the charges against Katiso Molefe and others, specifically addressing why they faced murder charges rather than charges related to leading a drug cartel in South Africa.
General Mkhwanazi details the motive behind DJ Sumbody’s murder
Mkhwanazi stated that law enforcement first arrests suspects on lesser charges to ensure they cannot evade justice, then proceeds with more serious allegations. He referenced the cases of AKA and Tibz to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach in the past.
He elaborated that DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka, was killed due to his alleged involvement in drug trafficking. Mkhwanazi accused DJ Sumbody of taking Katiso Molefe’s drugs and selling them.
“But the murders of these DJs is drugs related. The picture you are going to see when the matter gets to court is that this one thought he’s clever by stealing this one’s drugs and he starts selling them, and this one then killed him. So, not to say the victim is a clean man on drugs. He died because of something that he did wrong to this one,” he explained.
He noted that while Molefe is not currently charged with drug offenses, DJ Sumbody’s murder connects to the drug operations present in South Africa. Mkhwanazi mentioned that more individuals involved in the drug trade will soon face arrest.
“So yes, we’re not talking about the drugs on the arrest of Molefe, but drugs is part of the problem that leads into the murder. The charge is murder, but the reason is the drug that comes as a result. So, so there are many others. The ones that we are not mentioning is because we have not charged them with anything. That’s why you’re not comfortable to even mention them, but they are there,” General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said.
