Gigi Lamayne Releases Her EP “I’m Not A DJ” to Broaden Her Musical Horizons

Released through Paradise Sound System on Friday, 10 October 2025, this EP represents a pivotal moment. It showcases a rapper establishing her influence in spaces traditionally dominated by DJs while firmly retaining her artistic voice.

Comprising three tracks, I’m Not A DJ is intentionally concise, focusing on strong collaborations that resonate with late-night club scenes and festival performances. The opener, “STANDARD”, features Sizwe Alakine and Sweggy, creating a rhythmic, chant-driven anthem.

The track “EMOYENI,” a standout Afro House collaboration, brings together Nokwazi, Supta, and Peekay Mzee, with a classic touch from Professor, linking traditional South African dance music with Gigi’s fresh approach. The final track, “STIMELA,”, includes Lwanda Gogwana on trumpet, providing a soulful brass-infused conclusion that may fit both outdoor performances and intimate club settings.

This release signals the next step in a deliberate journey rather than a diversion. Recently, Gigi has promoted this project on social media, hinting at its debut on the global dance stage and presenting the EP as a live electronic spectacle that intertwines rapping, DJing, and performance.

Support comes from the SAMPRA Development Fund in collaboration with the Africa Rising Music Conference, which aims to elevate South African artists onto global platforms. This international initiative is already in progress, with a series of eight live performances set to take place across Asia, Europe, and South Africa, including stops in Singapore and Amsterdam, culminating in shows in Johannesburg and Hartbeespoort. This timing coincides with significant European music events like the Amsterdam Dance Event, positioning I’m Not A DJ for broader exposure within the global club scene.

For an artist recognized for her hip-hop achievements, this EP serves as a comprehensive exploration of her versatility. Gigi Lamayne has consistently navigated various genres, but I’m Not A DJ stands out as a clear expression of her dance-focused identity, shaped by collaboration, curation, and performance expertise. It also emphasizes that the dynamic exchange between rap and house music in South Africa is mutually influential, highlighting that rappers can drive the crowd just as effectively as DJs.
