Tyla Celebrates the Icons: A Tribute to Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa

South African pop artist Tyla shared insights into her inspirations in a recent GLAMOUR Girlhood Q&A, discussing her experiences, moments of beauty, and the significant women who influenced her aspirations.

When discussing the early female artists she looked up to, the “Water” singer highlighted two legendary figures in the South African music scene: Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa.

“I really admired Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa,” Tyla shared. “They were like our pop stars.”

Reflecting on her youth, Tyla recalled the impact of their music during her upbringing.

“Their music was just so infectious, it was everywhere. And they were women — it’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” she noted.

Both Brenda and Lebo are prominent names in the annals of South African music.

With their numerous hits and dynamic performances, their legacy continues to motivate upcoming talents like Tyla, who seek to elevate African pop on the international front.
