DJ Sbu’s Radio 2000 show faces BCCSA probe over alleged bias

DJ Sbu and his co-hosts from the Big Breakfast Show are under examination following a listener’s complaint lodged with the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA).

The team, which includes Sibusiso “DJ Sbu” Leope, Nathi Ndamase, and Lelo Mzaca, reportedly promoted personal religious and political beliefs during their morning segments.

A listener voiced concerns regarding Nathi Ndamase’s practice of reading Bible verses on air, suggesting that it displayed a preference for Christianity.

In their complaint, the listener stated: “I’m a regular listener of Radio 2000, and I have a concern about Nathi Ndamase reading biblical scriptures on the show and preaching. South Africa has many religions, so one religion cannot be given preference over the others. It’s discrimination because others are not given a platform. Nathi must keep her religion to herself.”

Ndamase reacted strongly to the accusations, standing by her choice to share her beliefs.

“I’m not going to apologise for reading scripture, for loving my God and sharing the Word.”

The situation became more complex when another listener alleged that DJ Sbu and Lelo Mzaca displayed favoritism toward the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

This complaint was also read by DJ Sbu on the show, with the claim stating that the presenters were using their platform to endorse specific political perspectives.

Mzaca reportedly challenged the accusations and requested proof, while DJ Sbu reaffirmed that they recognize their duties as public broadcasters.

“We know that we need to remain neutral on political views,” he remarked. “I don’t remember an instance where we gave favour to one party over another. And we would never campaign for any political party; that would be irresponsible.”

The BCCSA has initiated an investigation into these claims to assess whether the team violated broadcasting standards.

DJ Sbu’s Big Breakfast Show remains on the air on Radio 2000 as the inquiry progresses.
