Nigerian actor Odira Nwobu dies in South Africa
The news of Nollywood actor Odira Nwobu’s death has cast a shadow over the Nigerian film industry. The actor passed away in South Africa at the age of 43.
His lawyer, Chukwujiekwu Chukwudi, along with the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria, confirmed this tragic news, providing insights into the actor’s last moments.
Nwobu was well-known for his performances in over 60 films, and he died on Monday, 24 November 2025, while at a hotel in Benoni, Johannesburg.
The cause of death has not yet been determined, as his legal team is awaiting the results of an official autopsy.
Reports indicate that Odira had come back to his hotel room after an evening spent socializing with friends.
His attorney stated that he was found in serious distress, having trouble breathing.
An ambulance was called without delay, and emergency responders attempted to revive him with a defibrillator.
However, despite these efforts, “Odira died at the scene,” Chukwudi noted, pointing out that the actor was alone when he experienced this medical emergency.
Emeka Rollas, president of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria, provided context for Nwobu’s presence in South Africa.
He stated that the actor was part of a group of influencers attending a business engagement, contributing to the promotion of a real estate firm owned by a Nigerian entrepreneur.
Chukwudi accompanied the group in an official role as the legal adviser for the organization.
