Amapiano stars face backlash after previewing track referencing controversial figure Cat Matlala
Focalistic, DJ Maphorisa, Xduppy, and Benzoo are facing criticism on X following the teaser of their new song titled Cat Matlala.
A video of the artists enjoying the unreleased track, initially posted by Focalistic, quickly gained traction online and provoked a strong negative response.
The criticism is primarily focused on the song’s title, which alludes to Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, a contentious figure in South Africa linked to various legal issues, including accusations of attempted murder and conspiracy.
Many social media users expressed discomfort, suggesting the musicians trivialized a person connected to serious allegations.
One commenter raised questions regarding the song’s concept, stating that one of the artists “had this bright idea, shared it with the others and they thought it was a great idea?”
Another user specifically criticized Focalistic, claiming, “I blame people that kept this boy relevant beyond ‘Ke Star.’”
Criticism grew as one individual remarked, “South Africa has an unhealthy relationship with criminality.”
Another user challenged Focalistic directly, questioning what could be said about those impacted by Matlala’s purported actions, mentioning victims and describing the teaser as “very disturbing.”
Some individuals advised others to monitor the Instagram comments before they vanish, urging fans to “keep some screenshots before they start gaslighting y’all with mini vlogs.”
In the midst of the backlash, one user on X defended Focalistic and his collaborators, suggesting that the reactions were overblown.
“Idk maybe le betha ke spitori. The song is not about Cat Matlala 😭 it’s just one line that references him. He said he’s a cat like Matlala, simple comparison. Rap folks do this all the time.”
