Tulani ‘Tulz’ Madala Shines Bright in Amapiano Scene with ‘iMali Ikhona’

Tulani 'Tulz' Madala Illuminates Amapiano with 'iMali Ikhona'

Tulani “Tulz” Madala is well-known in the entertainment industry. With a career spanning radio, television, and media, he has been influential in shaping dialogues, promoting culture, and supporting the music scene from behind the scenes. With the launch of his inaugural Amapiano single “iMali Ikhona,” Tulz is now taking a significant step by showcasing his own work, thus initiating a new and decisive phase in his artistic path.

1. iMali Ikhona marks your official music debut. What inspired the timing and decision to finally pursue this step in your artistic journey?

I had a conversation with Thato and Thabang, who encouraged me to venture into this space. Though I was hesitant about starting a music career due to stories of its challenges, their support motivated me to accept the challenge, and now we’re here.

2. You’ve described the message behind the track as “the cake is big enough for everyone.” How does the song reflect your belief in collaboration and shared opportunity?

The cake is big enough for all to enjoy. Recently in South Africa, we have witnessed many celebrities entering the music realm. While some may argue there are too many DJs and producers, the successful transitions prove there is ample room for all. The global attention on South Africa enhances this opportunity.

3. You chose to spotlight emerging and previously unknown artists. What stood out to you about Springle, DJ Kafi, Olley RSA, Makhives101, C’biya, and Fierce?

With this track, I aim to highlight the South African music scene. My hope is that the success of iMali Ikhona will also bring recognition to these up-and-coming talents.

4. How did your background in radio, TV, and media influence the creative and production process behind iMali Ikhona?

My experience in radio and television gave me a clear advantage in producing and delivering _iMali Ikhona_. The years spent in media have enhanced my ability to focus on producing high-quality audio and effective editing.

5. Amapiano is thriving both locally and globally. What makes iMali Ikhona unique in today’s fast-evolving Amapiano soundscape?

It’s a festive Amapiano track designed to uplift listeners. While I won’t claim it’s entirely unique, it certainly has a distinct sound.

6. Can you take us into the studio — what was the energy like while creating the track with the ensemble of collaborators?

The process of creating music can be more tedious than enjoyable. I didn’t realize how much repetition was involved. The producers and vocalists brought vibrant energy to the beat, resulting in a stunning song from our sessions.

7. You mentioned that the industry has often felt like a “closed shop.” What industry norms are you hoping to challenge or change through projects like this?

I want to break the notion that connections are necessary to collaborate. Although working with familiar faces does play a role for me, I aspire for this project to motivate others to collaborate for the industry’s growth.

8. Do you see music becoming a long-term commitment for you, or is this project a bridge to future creative experiments?

I do view music as a long-term commitment and a fundamental aspect of my creative future. This initial endeavor is a valuable learning experience, and I intend to build on it while exploring diverse sounds and forging a lasting career.

9. What lessons did this process teach you about nurturing and guiding new talent in the industry?

While it’s a costly endeavor, nurturing new talent is vital for the industry’s advancement.

10. What do you hope listeners, especially Amapiano fans, feel or take away when they experience iMali Ikhona for the first time?

This is the track for the festive season and beyond, especially for those who enjoy uplifting vibes.

If this initial experience is any indication, Tulani “Tulz” Madala is poised to advance the culture one collaboration at a time.
