When the South African artist Mawhoo made her appearance in Zimbabwe over the weekend, it was more than just a performance; it was a heartfelt connection.
Mawhoo graced the stage in Harare at Karma on May 31.
Mawhoo connects with Zim fans
Following an energetic performance filled with audience participation and affection, the singer took to Facebook to express her sentiments:
“I want Zim to adopt me… what a sing along…”
This heartfelt statement won over Zimbabweans instantly. The responses poured in, with fans applauding her music, vibrant energy, and above all, her humble nature.
However, Mawhoo’s affectionate encounter with her Zimbabwean fans comes just a week after another South African celebrity, Naledi Aphiwe, left some fans in Zimbabwe feeling disheartened.
Zim fans compare Mawhoo and Naledi
<pJust days ago, when a fan from Zimbabwe kindly asked if Naledi Aphiwe might come to their country, her reply was a bit cheeky.
A TikTok user, Constance Muzenda, commented on one of Naledi’s posts, saying: ”Naledi, please come to Zimbabwe.” In response, Naledi replied: ”Hambani niyongilinda khona,” which means ”Go and wait for me there.”
Although intended as a light-hearted joke, her comment did not resonate well. Social media users from Zimbabwe quickly labeled her response as dismissive and perhaps disrespectful.
Now, they are clearly distinguishing between the two singers and taking sides. Here’s how Zimbabweans reacted:
@Akeem Dembo: “South Africans will grow jealous after seeing this.”
@Sean Craig: ” Mawhoo, please don’t come with Naledi…”
@InterpreterIIMlambo: ” Better than Aphiwe Naledi..”
@Daisline Tashly: “Oky, but please, Naledi must stay there, we don’t want her in Zimbabwe.“
