As the start of a new school year approaches in South Africa, many parents are preparing for the financial demands of purchasing educational supplies, which have seen rising costs amid a backdrop of high unemployment and living expenses.

In response to the difficulties many families face, reality TV personality, business leader, and humanitarian Inno Morolong has introduced a supportive initiative aimed at aiding low-income households as the 2026 academic year commences.

Morolong’s Back to School Stationery Drive aims to provide assistance to students from disadvantaged communities who may start the school year lacking essential supplies.

The program plans to gather and distribute crucial items, including exercise books, writing instruments, rulers, crayons, and school bags for those in need.

This initiative is particularly timely, as South Africa continues to face significant economic difficulties.

As of the last quarter of 2025, the unemployment rate was approximately 33.2%, with youth unemployment nearing 58.5%, highlighting the challenges many parents encounter in affording school necessities.

Many households impacted by job loss, orphanhood, or those led by minors often struggle the most to obtain necessary educational resources.

While some public schools offer stationery, many parents have reported that the assistance is often inadequate.

Rising costs associated with school uniforms and supplies have exacerbated the situation, putting students at a disadvantage even before classes begin.

In discussing her motivation for the initiative, Morolong highlighted the pivotal role education plays in fostering long-term improvement.

“Many learners start the school year without the basic tools they need to succeed. This drive is about restoring dignity, confidence, and hope, one school kit at a time,” she said.

The stationery drive is set to launch on Monday, January 5, with distribution events scheduled at select schools and homes on January 13 and 14, 2026.

Morolong has committed to funding the project herself but has welcomed contributions from individuals, businesses, and corporate sponsors to help purchase school supplies.
