Naledi Aphiwe says romantic relationship with Mawelele is fake
South African musician Naledi Aphiwe has addressed rumors surrounding her alleged romantic involvement with fellow artist Mawelele, stating that their connection was never genuine.
At just 19 years old, Aphiwe, who rose to fame after collaborating with Chris Brown, shared with Sowetan on Thursday, 15 January 2026, that the supposed relationship was solely a marketing tactic to promote their successful track “Romeo & Juliet.”
“It was all publicity for our music, and I thank everyone for believing in it. So, yes, I’m not, and never was, in a relationship with Mawelele. The only thing Mawelele would do was kiss me on the forehead, but that was it,” she explained.
This statement follows a wave of confusion among fans regarding the couple’s breakup announcement, especially after they received accolades for winning Best African Pop Song at the 2025 Metro FM Awards.
Entertainment analyst Jabu McDonald previously reported their award win on X, which contributed to the perception of a romantic link between the two.
Aphiwe later mentioned that she and Mawelele are currently involved with other partners, and she felt it was essential to clarify the nature of their past.
“I think it’s time we both respect our partners by coming clean,” she stated.
The emerging artist has had a fruitful start to 2026, kicking off the year with a nomination for Best African Duo or Group in R&B alongside Mawelele at the 9th All Africa Music Awards (Afrima), further establishing her footprint in the music industry.
