Four Convicted in Hate Crime Against Vinicius Jr. Receive Suspended Sentences

Four individuals convicted of a hate crime involving an effigy of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. were sentenced by a Madrid court following a January 2023 incident where they displayed a racist banner and an inflatable effigy before a match against Atletico Madrid. Sentences ranged from seven to fifteen months, but due to signed apologies, they received suspended sentences. Their penalties included fines, restraining orders, and educational programs on non-discrimination.

Court Ruling and Sentences

A Madrid court handed suspended prison sentences to four individuals convicted of a hate crime involving an effigy of Vinicius Jr., following events prior to a Copa del Rey match.

One defendant received a 15-month sentence for hate crime plus an additional seven months for threats, while the other three defendants received seven-month sentences for similar charges.

All defendants avoided prison time by signing an apology letter to stakeholders including Vinicius, Real Madrid, and LaLiga, outlining their remorse for the incident.

In conclusion, the Madrid court’s ruling against those involved in the hate crime demonstrates a strong stance against racism in sports. Despite receiving suspended sentences and fines, the requirement for rehabilitation programs highlights the importance of promoting equality and non-discrimination within society.
