Notorious figure in the criminal underworld, Vusimuzi Matlala, better known as “Cat,” has returned to the Johannesburg High Court as his lengthy criminal case approaches a pre-trial phase.
The 49-year-old appeared alongside four co-defendants, including his spouse, Tsakani Matlala.
The defendants face numerous serious allegations, including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering.
These charges are connected to an alleged scheme against Matlala’s former girlfriend, socialite Tebogo Thobejane, as well as other violent acts said to have occurred between 2022 and 2024.
Delays in the legal proceedings have been frequent, primarily due to concerns expressed by Matlala’s legal representation regarding his confinement.
His attorneys have argued that being held at eBongweni Supermax Prison in Kokstad significantly hampers their ability to prepare for trial by consulting with him adequately.
Matlala continues to contest his transfer and placement in the facility, an ongoing dispute that has significantly slowed the case’s progression through the judicial system.
Now that the pre-trial hearing has commenced, both the prosecution and defense are anticipated to tackle pending procedural matters as the prominent case moves closer to trial.
