Learnmore Jonasi, known in the comedy world as Learnmore Mwanyenyeka, hails from Zimbabwe and is currently gathering funds to address a $27 million (R460 million) lawsuit initiated by The Lion King composer Lebo M.
On their One54 Africa Podcast, hosts Akbar Gbajabiamila and Nigerian-American comedian Godfrey welcomed Mwanyenyeka to discuss various topics, including the lyrics from the movie’s iconic theme song, Circle of Life.
Mwanyenyeka argued that the phrase “Nants ingonyama bagithi baba” translates to “Look, there is a lion. Oh my God,” which Lebo M contends is a significant misrepresentation.
Lebo M says he tried to reach out to Mwanyenyeka in private to address his concerns about the comedian undermining his work and culture with that translation.
When Mwanyenyeka did not engage positively with his efforts to resolve the matter amicably, Lebo M felt compelled to resort to legal actions.
The comedian has initiated a GoFundMe page to seek financial support for his legal expenses against the lawsuit.
The campaign is titled Help Learnmore Fight an Unjust Lawsuit and has thus far gathered $18,976 (R324,869) towards his goal of $20,000 (R342,400).
