Jelly Babie claims her estranged husband collected all her gigs money
South African singer and dancer Jelly Babie has made alarming assertions regarding the alleged abuse she faced during her marriage to Koketso.
The artist known for her hit Jukulyn shared her experiences on Instagram, detailing instances of physical, emotional, and financial abuse that have left significant scars.
In a candid remark about her marriage, Jelly Babie admitted that she regrets getting married.
Through a series of Instagram stories, she unveiled her ordeal by sharing graphic images that depict bruises on her legs.
“I survived being in an abusive marriage at a young age, but I don’t think I will ever recover,” she wrote.
The 20-year-old artist also disclosed that the trauma led her to multiple suicide attempts, including sharing an image of herself in a hospital bed.
She claimed that her husband exerted financial control over her, pressuring her to hand over her earnings from performances, amounting to R2 million over a two-year period.
“He manipulated me and told me I can’t save money, I spend a lot, so I must send him my gigs money so we can save money to have a better future, and I did send him all my money for like 2 full years,” she noted, providing screenshots from her banking application to substantiate her story.
Speculation about marital issues had previously surfaced when Jelly Babie hinted at parting ways with her husband just eleven months after their wedding, sharing an image of herself holding her wedding ring with the caption, “Letting go of my shayla.”
However, she later seemed to reconcile with him, as several of her posts featured her wearing the ring.
The Bacardi star and Koketso tied the knot in 2024 after her lobola ceremony, a decision that garnered public scrutiny due to perceptions that she married before fully establishing her music career.
Jelly Babie gained prominence in 2023, due in part to her association with the late Vusi Ma R5, and has collaborated with well-known artists like DJ Maphorisa and Pabi Cooper.
Her personal life has attracted media attention, particularly her choice to drop out of school in Grade 11 to focus on her music, a decision that first sparked public interest.
Now, Jelly Babie’s recent revelations illuminate the challenges she has confronted, emphasizing the impact of abuse and the strength required to come forward.
