Empowering Beats: DJ Fae Fae’s Journey from Brand Building to a Movement for Female DJs

DJ Faith Makubung, also known as DJ Fae Fae, is more than just a DJ and radio host; she is making an impact on the cultural landscape.

As the driving force behind YFM’s “All Girls On Deck” (AGOD), Makubung has established a significant platform aimed at highlighting female DJs in an industry that often undermines their skills.

In a recent discussion with IOL, she shared insights on her journey, focusing on personal development and the broader significance of her mission.

“People are constantly trying to say female DJs in South Africa are just showing off their bodies… but when they come to my show, they actually hear these girls playing,” she stated.

Since its launch, AGOD has been committed to a clear vision. Initially, the mix show was not exclusive to women; however, as it progressed, a deliberate decision was made to highlight female DJs.

“I wanted to open up the opportunity because there are so many female DJs who deserve the platform,” she explained.

This choice has proven beneficial. The program began as a late-night mix show and has evolved into a recognized venue where female DJs from diverse backgrounds can share their skills.

“It’s not age-restricted. You can be 40 and still come in and play an epic set,” she noted.

For Makubung, however, radio is merely a starting point. She aims to extend AGOD’s reach beyond the airwaves into live performances.

“We want South Africa to see these DJs live, not just judge them from social media clips.”

Makubung’s ambitions extend off the air as well. She is currently pursuing studies in music production, with the intention of mastering the craft prior to releasing her own tracks.

“ If I’m going to release music, I need to understand what I’m releasing,” she said.

“ I don’t want to be in a position where people take advantage of me because I don’t know the business.”

Her educational pursuits stem from a desire for autonomy and ownership, a recurring theme throughout her career.

“ I’m the only girl in my class, and I’m there to prove I deserve to be there,” she remarked.

Additionally, she is venturing into the beauty industry, concentrating on wig-making, illustrating her innovative approach to sustainability within entertainment.

“ I’m not going to be on stage forever. I had to think about how I make money beyond DJing,” she clarified.

While she is already accepting orders, she is deliberately postponing a full launch until all aspects meet her quality standards.

“ I’m not about to launch something half-done. I want it to be perfect.”

Managing multiple projects requires her to be disciplined, a skill she acknowledges takes effort.

“ I write everything down and prioritise, and I’ve had to learn how to say no.”

For Makubung, success is not determined by outside recognition but by her own aspirations and the realization of her goals.

“ Success is looking at my vision board and realizing I actually achieved those things,” she shared.

“ I’m big on manifestation. You have to see it, think about it, live it.”

As “All Girls On Deck” continues its upward trajectory and her personal brand expands across various sectors, it is evident that DJ Fae Fae is not just creating pathways for herself, but also for many women in music.

“The girls want to prove everybody wrong, and we’re going to continue to dominate,” she asserts.
