The worldwide quest for the ideal Tropika Island of Treasure setting has now shifted to the striking, volcanic landscapes of La Reunion.
In the recent episode of the Tropika Island Search companion series, Shashi Naidoo, the show’s renowned champion from season two and an All-Star participant, explored the charm of this French Indian Ocean locale.
Celebrated for its “three-islands-in-one” appeal, La Reunion showcases an exceptional combination of verdant forests, active volcanoes, and crystalline lagoons.
First impressions always count. What was your very first thought the moment you arrived on La Reunion?
Though I felt quite exhausted upon my arrival, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the astonishing scenery surrounding me. It was unlike any island I had previously visited. It felt as if I had discovered a hidden treasure, nestled amidst vibrant green mountains and striking volcanic vistas.
La Reunion is known for its adventure and natural beauty. Now that you’ve experienced it, what makes it such a standout holiday destination?
La Reunion is a fantastic vacation destination because it truly offers everything: adventure, stunning views, and opportunities to unwind. We had an incredible time kayaking in the ocean and zipping through the treetops. Plus, leaping off a waterfall was one of the most exhilarating things I’ve ever experienced!

La Reunion feels like a true playground for adventurers. What were some of your most unforgettable experiences?
It truly is a playground! One of my standout moments was right after ziplining above a lagoon. I had to leap off a cliff, and as someone who fears heights, I was absolutely terrified! But that was the essence of the show – challenging ourselves and growing from those moments. Taking that jump was an experience of utter liberation. It represented overcoming my fears and showing that I could achieve anything I aimed for. Those moments are what make Tropika Island of Treasure so exceptional; they teach valuable lessons in resilience.
If you had just 24 hours to help a friend experience La Reunion, what would your “must-do” itinerary look like?
To kick off the day, I’d suggest a breathtaking helicopter tour around the island. Observing the landscapes from above, including the mountains, waterfalls, and coastline, is an incredible way to start. Following that, we’d embark on a hiking adventure through Volcano National Park to soak in the awe-inspiring sights. Afterward, we’d seek some thrills with ziplining! Lastly, we’d unwind at a beautiful beach, cocktail in hand, enjoying the sun and the delightful fresh seafood.
What makes La Reunion the perfect location to host Season 12 of Tropika Island of Treasure?
It’s like experiencing three distinct islands in one! The variety of landscapes is unparalleled. You can find majestic volcanoes, lush woodlands, and breathtaking coastal beaches all within a close range. This allows for every challenge to be set against a completely different backdrop. The island’s stunning vistas not only serve as an inspiring backdrop but also motivate contestants to go all out. It enchants, drawing out everyone’s best qualities, making it the perfect environment for competition and camaraderie.
