Sithelo Shozi and other influencers free from being investigated by SIU
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has rejected widespread rumors that influencers Cyan Boujee, Sithelo Shozi, and MaWhoo are being investigated in connection with alleged corruption related to Ekurhuleni funds.
The speculation emerged on social media following a post that claimed the SIU had expanded its inquiry into Ekurhuleni City manager Kagiso Lerutla, asserting that the investigation now encompassed several prominent figures.
The social media post alleged that authorities were investigating potential misappropriation of public funds into private accounts, which could have been used to purchase luxury items via intermediaries.
This claim rapidly gained momentum online, leading some social media users to call for lifestyle audits of public figures.
In response, the SIU acted promptly to dispel these rumors, labeling the claims as unfounded.
In a statement issued via X, the SIU clarified its operations, stating that it does not target individuals for investigations.
“FAKE NEWS! #KnowYourSIU| 1. The SIU does not target people, nor do we investigate people. We investigate procurement processes in State Institutions and all levels of government departments, and it’s through these processes that we find people who are responsible. In simple terms, we follow the money, and the money leads us to people,” part of the statement read.
The unit also detailed how it initiates investigations. It explained that inquiries can only begin through tips or official complaints, which are evaluated prior to a request made to the President for validation.
“2. The law that governs the SIU states that the SIU does not identify its own investigations. We receive allegations, which we then assess to see if falls within our mandate, and we write a motivation for a proclamation to the President for authorisation,” the statement continued.
While distancing itself from the spreading misinformation, the SIU encouraged the public to report any suspicions of corruption through its dedicated hotline and email, emphasizing the importance of whistleblowers in combating corruption.
