DJ Sumbody’s Family Defends Him Against ‘Reckless’ Drug-Related Murder Allegations

Commissioner Madlanga Investigates Sergeant Nkosi's Ties to DJ Sumbody Case

The relatives of the late musician DJ Sumbody have responded to recent allegations hinting at a connection between his murder and a botched drug deal.

Reports emerged after a leaked affidavit from a close associate, indicating that the circumstances surrounding the DJ’s assassination could be linked to criminal dealings within Gauteng’s nightlife.

The affidavit also claimed that the unnamed associate had been cooperating with law enforcement amid threats to his safety.

This renewed speculation has brought back discussions about the events surrounding the shooting in 2022 that resulted in Sumbody’s death and that of his bodyguard.

In light of these developments, the Sefoka family issued a statement, firmly rejecting the allegations and expressing their discontent over what they view as baseless narratives gaining traction.

“As the family of the late Oupa John Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody, we are deeply disturbed by the article published on 19 April 2026 and by the false, reckless, and baseless allegations that have since circulated in public discourse and across social media platforms,” the statement read.

The family emphasized that they refuse to engage in a public debate over claims circulating outside the legal framework, underscoring that the issue remains a matter for the courts.

“This matter remains the subject of an ongoing legal process, and the merits of the case are still before the courts. We have full respect for the judicial process and the criminal justice system currently unfolding, and for that reason, we will not entertain false and baseless allegations made outside of that process,” they stated.

They also cautioned against the dissemination of unverified claims, advising that their legal counsel has been notified and is ready to take action if necessary.
