The Bloemfontein High Court has imposed a 24-year prison sentence on Tumelo Mothupi (46) for the murder of his former girlfriend, aged 51.
According to Constable Maselela Langa, a spokesperson for the Free State Police, the incident occurred on Saturday, 19 October 2024, around 23:00 when Mothupi arrived at his ex-girlfriend’s residence. While there, he stabbed her multiple times with a knife and struck her with a brick, ultimately leading to her death.
After the attack, Mothupi fled the scene but was later identified by a family member. Initially evading capture, he was apprehended following coordinated intelligence efforts by the police, including a team led by Sergeant Tsholo of the Bloemspruit SAPS Detectives Branch. Mothupi was arrested and formally charged with murder on Sunday, 3 November 2024.
He was denied bail and remained in custody until his sentencing by the Bloemfontein High Court on Wednesday, 28 April 2026.
Detective Sergeant Sechaba Tsholo served as the investigating officer in the case.
