Erasmus Adjusts Springbok Squad as Kolisi Withdraws; Kriel Set to Captain

In a last-minute change for the Qatar Airways Cup match against the Barbarians in Cape Town, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has adjusted his 23-man squad after regular captain Siya Kolisi withdrew due to injury. Marco van Staden steps in as Kolisi’s replacement, joining Vincent Tshituka and Jean-Luc du Preez in the loose trio, while centre Jesse Kriel, who debuted in 2015 and has played 79 tests, will captain the team for the first time.

Injury Forces Captaincy Change Ahead of Match

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi will miss the Qatar Airways Cup match due to an alleged injury, creating a leadership void in the team. This marks a significant change in squad dynamics.

Marco van Staden has stepped into the starting lineup to fill Kolisi’s position, joining players Vincent Tshituka and Jean-Luc du Preez in the loose trio. Team adjustments have been made swiftly.

“We must adapt to challenges swiftly, and Marco is ready to take on this critical role,” said Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus during the squad announcement.

Jesse Kriel Set for Leadership Opportunity

Centre Jesse Kriel will captain the Springboks for the first time, albeit in an unofficial match. Kriel has been a consistent player since his debut in 2015.

Having played 79 tests, Kriel brings considerable experience, and his leadership will be crucial for the team’s performance against the Barbarians this weekend.

Rassie Erasmus stated, “Jesse has shown great potential as a leader, and we’re excited to see him step up in Siya’s absence for this match.”

Rassie Erasmus has made a crucial last-minute change to his squad for the Qatar Airways Cup, with Jesse Kriel stepping up as captain in Siya Kolisi’s absence due to injury. Marco van Staden fills Kolisi’s role in the lineup.
