Mamelodi Sundowns’ head coach Miguel Cardoso has addressed the rumors surrounding Monnapule Saleng’s absence from the squad.
The winger’s recent lack of participation has sparked various speculations; however, Cardoso asserts that the situation is solely linked to an injury.
Saleng transferred to Sundowns from Orlando Pirates in January, a move that surprised many. He came to Chloorkop with significant expectations, though he was already dealing with an injury. Despite making several appearances, his omission from recent matches raised eyebrows.
Cardoso emphasized that Saleng’s condition is related to health issues, not a tactical decision. Some observers had suggested he might not fit Sundowns’ style, which contributed to his limited playing time.
“There’s no competition because there’s space for all of them. If you look at the medical report, it’s clear Saleng could not be available,” stated the Portuguese coach.
This situation became apparent during a past match, where Saleng experienced discomfort while warming up.
“He was on the bench but couldn’t play. When he complained he was not okay, we couldn’t change the match sheet; it was too late,” Cardoso added.
Saleng was once again missing as Sundowns achieved a 3-0 victory against Polokwane City at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday, with Nuno Santos stepping in for him.
