Banyana Banyana Stage Sit-In Over Unpaid Dues Ahead of WAFCON Training

The Banyana Banyana, South Africa’s women’s national football team, are currently in Morocco for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) set to begin on July 5. However, the defending champions staged a sit-in during a scheduled training session on June 27, demanding overdue payments from the South African Football Association (SAFA) related to their April friendlies against Malawi, prompting urgent discussions with management and SAFA President Danny Jordaan.

Banyana Banyana’s Training Suspension Amid Payment Dispute

The defending champions of WAFCON, Banyana Banyana, reportedly began a sit-in and refused to train during a scheduled session in Morocco over unpaid dues from previous matches.

Sources indicate that the players have not received payments since April’s friendly against Malawi, causing significant unrest within the team ahead of their tournament preparations.

A spokesperson for Banyana stated, “We hope this matter is resolved swiftly so we can focus completely on the upcoming matches.” Their emphasis on unity and focus is evident.

Emergency Management Meeting to Address Player Concerns

Following the training suspension, an urgent meeting was held between the players and team management to discuss the ongoing payment issues undermining team morale.

SAFA President Danny Jordaan was reportedly informed of the situation, stressing the importance of resolving financial matters for player welfare as the tournament looms.

The team’s management expressed commitment to addressing the players’ concerns, ensuring all financial obligations will be evaluated promptly to restore focus for the upcoming match.

Banyana Banyana’s recent sit-in highlights ongoing issues regarding unpaid dues, jeopardizing their preparation for the upcoming WAFCON tournament. As they confront these challenges, the players’ commitment to both their sport and rightful compensation remains evident.
