Disorder broke out in the trial concerning Senzo Meyiwa’s murder when the defendants called for the dismissal of senior court interpreter Mr. Jonas.
During a tense exchange in the courtroom, the presiding judge clarified that he lacks the power to simply “fire” the interpreter in the absence of proof of contempt or misconduct.
The judge remarked:
“It has never happened in South Africa… where litigants are unhappy about the conduct of a fellow employee.”
He emphasized that the interpreter is entitled to constitutional rights and workplace protections, stating:
“He’s got human rights… he’s a member of a union.”
The court has been adjourned until the following day while the judge seeks guidance from the Chief Justice regarding this unusual situation.
