Lebogang Maile, the Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, has shared an update regarding the health of former Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba, who is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer and tuberculosis (TB).
The news of Mashaba’s health issues has led to a wave of support from the football community in South Africa, with fans, former players, and peers expressing their wishes for the beloved coach’s swift recovery.
In response to reports on his condition, Maile visited Mashaba and found that the former coach remains optimistic despite his health struggles.
“After receiving news of his ill health, we paid a courtesy visit to Coach Mashaba and are pleased to report that he is in high spirits and remains positive,” said Maile.
The MEC urged the public to keep the former coach in their thoughts and prayers.
“We wish him a speedy recovery and urge members of the public to keep him in their prayers,” he added.
However, Maile has cautioned against individuals who may be taking advantage of Mashaba’s condition by soliciting money under misleading circumstances.
“We also caution against extortionists who are fraudulently using his name to solicit money from the public,” Maile noted.
This caution comes in light of reports claiming that some have been asking for donations to help with Mashaba’s medical costs.
Maile emphasized that any genuine fundraising efforts will be communicated through official channels.
“A formal statement will be issued with the correct details for Good Samaritans who may wish to offer support and assistance,” he stated.
Mashaba is regarded as one of South Africa’s most esteemed football figures, having led the national team and played a pivotal role in nurturing young football talent throughout his extensive career.
