Switzerland Ends 88-Year World Cup Knockout Jinx with Victory Over Algeria

Switzerland advanced to the World Cup last 16 for the first time in 88 years following a decisive 2-0 win over Algeria in Vancouver.

Softfootball noted that Murat Yakin’s team not only broke a streak of seven consecutive knockout round defeats but also looked confident heading into their next match against either Colombia or Ghana.

The match began with Algeria applying early pressure, but they failed to capitalize as Switzerland successfully contained Riyad Mahrez throughout the game. The Swiss took the lead in just 10 minutes when Breel Embolo calmly scored, giving them an advantage.

Immediately after halftime, Switzerland extended their lead when Dan Ndoye, a winger for Nottingham Forest, netted a goal in the 46th minute, significantly diminishing Algeria’s chance of a comeback. Fabian Rieder had an opportunity to increase the score further late in the match, but it did not detract from a landmark evening for the Swiss side.

This victory represents Switzerland’s first knockout stage win at the World Cup since 1938, providing a boost of confidence as they head into the next round.
