A single image sparked a new wave of misinformation across South African social media, with veteran actor Seputla Sebogodi at the center of false allegations regarding his financial well-being. In response, fellow industry veteran Sello Maake kaNcube stepped in to defend him publicly.
Maake kaNcube vehemently criticized the misleading posts suggesting Sebogodi was in financial trouble, calling the dissemination of such claims both irresponsible and disrespectful towards artists.
The controversy was triggered by a widely circulated photo of Sebogodi, known for his iconic role as Kenneth Mashaba in the popular soap opera Generations. This image was shared out of context and did not reflect any personal difficulties. In reality, it was captured during promotional events for the theatrical production Black Moon at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda.
As the photo spread on social media, numerous users paired it with unverified claims that misrepresented the actor’s situation.
In light of the escalating rumors, Maake kaNcube issued a forthright statement expressing his irritation over how easily professional endeavors had been contorted into viral content aimed solely at garnering attention.
“As artists, we already face enough challenges without having our work repackaged as propaganda for engagement,” he said.
He emphasized that the image was indicative of professional dedication and should not have been manipulated to perpetuate false narratives about Sebogodi’s life.
Maake kaNcube also took aim at those knowingly distorting the truth for online engagement, asserting that such actions undermine the dignity of individuals and tarnish the reputation of South Africa’s entertainment sector.
“There is a difference between raising awareness and misleading the public. The truth matters. Respect matters. Our industry deserves better.”
His remarks have reignited discussions about the rising influence of misinformation on social media, where images and videos are often shared devoid of their original context.
For prominent figures, especially long-standing actors, false narratives can quickly escalate and are often hard to rectify, potentially causing lasting harm even after the facts come to light.
At the time of writing, Seputla Sebogodi had not made a public statement addressing the viral misinformation or Maake kaNcube’s comments.
