A small community in the Eastern Cape is in shock after the discovery of five family members found deceased in their residence, an event that police suspect may involve domestic violence.
Authorities in the OR Tambo District have initiated a mass murder inquiry following the retrieval of the bodies at a homestead located in Mfundisweni A/A, Magqagqeni Locality, close to Flagstaff, on Friday morning.
As reported by the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers were dispatched to the scene around 8:52 am after a worried local citizen visited the home and uncovered the tragic situation.
Upon arrival, police discovered the bodies of five individuals, which included an adult man, his spouse, and their three children. Each had suffered deadly gunshot wounds.
Authorities also found a gun next to the body of the adult male, prompting law enforcement to explore the theory of a domestic murder-suicide. They cautioned, however, that the circumstances of the deaths have yet to be confirmed, and all scenarios are being explored in the ongoing investigation.

Forensic teams have since taken charge of the investigation, meticulously looking for clues at the property to determine what transpired within the home.
Police indicated that post mortem analyses will be carried out to officially ascertain the cause of death for each individual.
The incident has left the local residents in disbelief as they grapple with the loss of an entire family.
SAPS has conveyed its sympathies to the friends and family of the deceased and is urging anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist with the investigation.
