An ordinary police patrol on Sunday morning escalated into a significant criminal inquiry when officers uncovered an unregistered firearm concealed beneath a suspect’s jacket while closing down an illegal shebeen in Kutlwanong, Odendaalsrus.
A 22-year-old male was taken into custody after law enforcement officials found him with a silver handgun, which had its serial number removed, as well as live ammunition. Subsequent investigations revealed that he was also an undocumented foreign national.
This incident occurred on 12 July 2026 as members of the Odendaalsrus Crime Prevention Unit and Community Service Centre carried out patrols in the area.
At approximately 05:30, officers identified a liquor establishment operating at the K2 location in Kutlwanong. Upon further examination, it was determined that the venue was running unlawfully, prompting police to initiate a shutdown.
During this operation, officers observed a man behaving in a manner that raised suspicion. They approached him and sought permission to perform a search.
The search unveiled a silver handgun hidden under his jacket. The absence of a serial number indicated possible tampering, and six rounds of live ammunition were also retrieved by the police.
He was swiftly arrested and will face charges for possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Authorities confirmed that he will face additional charges under the Immigration Act due to his undocumented status in South Africa.
His appearance in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court is anticipated in the near future.
In a related effort, actions were taken against the illegal liquor outlet. The owner received a fine, and the alcohol found on the premises was seized.
This operation is part of the police’s ongoing commitment to combat illegal liquor trading, firearm offenses, and other criminal activities that impact communities throughout the Free State.
Law enforcement has urged community members to report any illegal activities and suspicious behavior to facilitate a swift response and crime prevention.
