A fire incident at a commercial building in Gauteng has led to the temporary closure of the SASSA Meyerton Local Office, prompting officials to work on restoring services while beneficiaries are redirected to other locations.
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced the temporary closure of its Meyerton Local Office due to a fire that damaged portions of the building housing the office.
The fire broke out on the evening of Tuesday, 21 July 2026, reportedly starting in one of the shops within the building before spreading to various businesses, including the SASSA office itself.
Senior Manager of SASSA Gauteng Region, Lungelo Mkamba, stated that the agency’s Security Management and Facilities Management Units, alongside appropriate authorities, are currently assessing the full extent of the damage.
“The cause of the fire is not yet known and is being investigated,” Mkamba mentioned.
The closure has been enacted as a precaution for the safety of beneficiaries, employees, and other stakeholders during ongoing safety inspections and damage evaluations.
Alternative SASSA Offices for Beneficiaries
SASSA has assured beneficiaries that those who typically receive services at the Meyerton Local Office can still access essential support.
Individuals seeking in-person assistance are directed to visit the Vereeniging or Sebokeng Local Offices until further notice.
Additionally, staff from the Meyerton branch have been temporarily assigned to neighboring offices to help manage the increased demand and ensure continued support for beneficiaries.
The agency aims to minimize delays and ensure that vulnerable beneficiaries maintain access to critical social assistance services.
Digital Services Remain Accessible During Closure
SASSA has encouraged beneficiaries to utilize its online platforms while the Meyerton office is closed.
A variety of online services, including eLife Certification, social grant applications, and other self-service options, can be accessed through the agency’s online portal.
Beneficiaries applying for the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant can continue to submit their applications via the dedicated SRD platform.
The agency has urged the public to make use of online services to alleviate pressure on nearby offices.
