Three Sentenced to 15 Years for KwaZulu Natal Pension Heist

Ritavi Man, 42, Faces Serious Charges in Shocking Child Abuse Case

The recent conclusion of a violent robbery case, which involved the disarming of security personnel and the theft of a government vehicle, has come nearly four years after the incident occurred at a SASSA pension pay point in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The Mtubatuba Regional Court has imposed a 15-year prison sentence on three men for their involvement in the armed robbery, targeting pension distributions in the Gunjaneni area close to KwaMsane.

These convictions signal the end of a protracted inquiry led by the Hawks, resulting in multiple apprehensions and years of judicial procedures before justice was finally served.

As stated by KwaZulu-Natal Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, the robbery took place on September 10, 2021, when security guards alongside South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) officials were disbursing pension payments at a recognized pay point.

The accused have been named as Mzwandile Ndwandwe (36), Muntukayise Manqele (34), and Sabelo Gumede (38), who reportedly confronted the officials brandishing firearms before executing the robbery.

During the incident, the attackers seized three firearms from the security guards, took an undisclosed sum of cash, and made off with a SASSA vehicle.

The violent incident prompted an immediate reaction from the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit in Richards Bay, along with other law enforcement bodies.

Utilizing intelligence gathered post-robbery, police quickly located a group of seven suspects near Hlabisa. After a thorough investigation, all seven were charged with armed robbery.

As the judicial proceedings unfolded, only Ndwandwe, Manqele, and Gumede were convicted, while their four co-defendants were found not guilty.

The court handed down a 15-year imprisonment sentence for armed robbery to each of the three men.

Furthermore, each received five years’ imprisonment for possession of an unlicensed firearm and 12 months’ imprisonment for unlawful possession of ammunition.

The court determined that these sentences will be served concurrently, resulting in a total of 15 years for each man.

Additionally, the court deemed all three individuals unfit to possess a firearm, emphasizing the severity of their offenses.

This sentencing concludes a case that underscores the risks faced by officials and security personnel responsible for administering essential social grant payments to at-risk communities.

For the Hawks and the prosecuting team, the verdict is a testament to years of diligent investigative efforts aimed at holding the perpetrators of the armed robbery accountable.
