DJ Cleo has formally departed from Radio 2000 after a tenure exceeding two years, with his resignation letter made public on X on Friday, 21 August.
The DJ, whose birth name is Tlou Monyepao, confirmed that his last episode of The Eskhaleni Party with DJ Cleo would conclude at 1 am on Saturday, 22 August, effectively ending his 28-month stint at the station.
His exit marks a significant transition, having started at Radio 2000 on 5 April 2024 with the launch of his program The Eskhaleni Party with DJ Cleo.
In his letter, DJ Cleo reflected positively on his experience at the station, emphasizing his strong work ethic and the achievements of his show.
He noted that he exceeded the objectives set for him and often filled in for colleagues when necessary. Additionally, he highlighted his clean disciplinary record as a point of pride, stating he upheld professionalism throughout his time at Radio 2000.
DJ Cleo expressed gratitude to the management of Radio 2000, particularly Mr. Tony Soglo, for the opportunity to host the program, stating that receiving a Telkom Radio Awards nomination in the show’s first year was among his most significant achievements.
Reasons for DJ Cleo’s Departure
Although DJ Cleo’s resignation letter commended his time at the station, he made clear his intention to redirect focus toward other aspects of his life. The artist behind the hit Goodbye listed his music career, family responsibilities, and educational goals as key priorities influencing his decision. He particularly emphasized the importance of mental well-being and personal peace.
“I am choosing to refocus my energy on my music career, my family, my academic journey and most importantly my peace and mental health.”
His future plans include dedicating more time to his degree, performing live, and mentoring upcoming artists. DJ Cleo identified his mentees, including uMaifrend Womzulu and Pulinshki, as part of his ongoing objectives.
He also addressed rumors suggesting that his resignation was linked to a new position at another radio station.
A noteworthy aspect of DJ Cleo’s letter was his determination to conclude his time at Radio 2000 without revealing any potential internal disputes. While he characterized his 28 months at the station as an “amazing” experience, he expressed his intention to refrain from further commentary on the matter.
“I had an amazing 28 months on the job and will not taint it by saying anything else beyond this point or on any platform,” he stated.
This statement drew significant attention from his audience, prompting many to interpret it as an indication of deeper issues surrounding his departure. Nevertheless, DJ Cleo maintained a respectful attitude towards Radio 2000 and the SABC, wishing the station success after his exit.
