South African DJ, producer, and artist Skillz embarks on a significant new journey as a primary artist with today’s much-anticipated unveiling of the music video for his acclaimed track, “Phumelela,” featuring the talented Simmy and Zeh McGeba.
Produced by gamma., the cinematic visual makes its exclusive debut today (Friday) on Trace TV, with a global launch on YouTube to follow later on.
This release comes in the wake of the tremendous commercial acclaim and viral success of his chart-topping single “Mamma,” in collaboration with Zee Nxumalo and Sykes.
With “Phumelela”—which translates to “to succeed” or “to prevail” in isiZulu—Skillz combines his renowned, top-tier production heritage with a stirring, faith-inspiring visual story that embodies the essence of overcoming challenges.
Directed by the innovative Luthando Sigubudu and produced by Kwezi Kreativ, with executive production from Supreme Music Group’s Wandile Ngubane and Zwakele Mdletshe, the music video draws profound creative influences from the historic pilgrimage customs of Lalibela, Ethiopia. Set against breathtaking, dramatic sandstone vistas, the video portrays a community of believers on a significant spiritual quest through the mountains in pursuit of blessings, purpose, and enlightenment.
The visual environment is rich with atmospheric elements, intertwining flowing white and blue attire with the gentle illumination of candlelight and open flames to mirror the emotional and spiritual richness of the song.
Discussing the core motivation behind the project, Skillz expressed his aspiration to create a meaningful impact on his viewers.
“I want my community to watch the video and leave with a sense of hope. No matter how dark or lonely things might feel, I want them to remember that there’s still purpose, there’s still faith, and there’s always a way towards the light,” Skillz shared.
Hailing from Esikhawini, KwaZulu-Natal, Skillz is well-acquainted with the upper echelons of the South African music scene.
He began producing instrumentals at the young age of 15 and landed his first significant industry opportunities in 2014.
Over the last ten years, he has made a name for himself as a highly sought-after producer, creating hits for iconic artists such as DJ Zinhle, Zakes Bantwini, Sun-El Musician, DJ Tira, Mampintsha, DJ Lag, Babes Wodumo, and DJ Sox. His noteworthy recent works include “Sorry”—a collaboration with DJ Zinhle, MK Productions, and Section Five—and the viral hit “Mamma.
With “Phumelela,” Skillz confidently transitions from behind the scenes to the forefront, carving out a unique and genuine sonic and visual persona that paves the way for an exciting future as a leading artist.
