At 33, he reflects on his journey from aspiring soccer player to music icon, motivated by family values and spiritual connection, while juggling his roles as a husband and a father.
Navigating Dreams: The Soccer Journey
Dumi Mkokstad’s early passion for soccer led him to explore a potential career during his late teens. “Soccer was the only passion I had,” he stated, reflecting on that critical period.
Despite his initial commitment to soccer, Mkokstad faced challenges that prevented him from advancing. He noted, “Whenever I had soccer matches, they clashed with my music gigs, leading to losing my spot on the team.”
Returning to soccer ambition during the pandemic, Mkokstad joined Royal AM but struggled with age constraints. “I couldn’t fulfill my dream because of my age [in my late 20s],” he lamented, indicating a deep emotional conflict.
A Musical Legacy: 25 Years of Gospel
Mkokstad’s 25-year career as a gospel artist is marked by significant achievements, including his first album at age eight. “Winning a Crown Gospel Gold Award in 2013 changed my life,” he remembered.
His upbringing in a musical, devout Christian home greatly influenced his career path. “My dad is a pastor; we used to sit at home and sing, motivating my interest in music,” he remarked.
Recently, Mkokstad released a new album, UYesu yiNkosi, and embarked on a revival tour, emphasizing the significance of his music. He expressed, “What I love about gospel is that I get to serve people.”
