LIMPOPO: The Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) has issued a warning to communities in Limpopo to stay alert as severe weather is likely to impact various regions of the province.
This advisory follows a Yellow Level 2 weather alert from the South African Weather Service (SAWS), which predicts heavy rains, thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds that may cause damage.
Officials warn that these extreme weather conditions could lead to fallen trees obstructing roadways, localized flooding, and interruptions to services, especially during power surges.
Additionally, the adverse weather may cause harm to vehicles and structures while making roads dangerous for drivers.
Pule Shayi, Limpopo’s MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, has urged residents, particularly those in vulnerable regions, to take appropriate safety measures.
“Residents in high-risk areas, especially in the Waterberg District, must seek shelter from hail, stay away from flooded areas and motorists must exercise maximum caution,” said Shayi.
Authorities are advising communities to refrain from crossing flooded roads or rivers, while motorists should decrease their speed, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and avoid traveling through flooded regions.
The provincial disaster management centre remains vigilant, collaborating with other government departments and non-governmental organizations to assess the situation and address any incidents related to the severe weather.
The harsh weather is expected to last from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon, prompting officials to encourage residents to stay tuned to official weather updates and follow safety recommendations.
Residents are advised to report emergencies to the necessary authorities and to limit travel during periods of severe weather.
