Edward Khomotso Madiba, a prisoner who escaped custody, has been captured in Brits, North West.
According to information received by MDNtv, his capture occurred around 10pm on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, following a thorough search by the South African Police Service, the Department of Correctional Services, and rangers from Borakalalo National Park.
Madiba is currently being held at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre. Both the SAPS and Correctional Services have not yet issued their expected joint statement detailing the events leading to his arrest.
The manhunt escalated after Madiba was seen in Fafung, close to Jericho, on Tuesday.
MDNtv has learned that workers from the Expanded Public Works Programme recognized Madiba after he exited a bus near a local tavern. He was reportedly dressed in a blue work suit and wearing a hat.
Upon realizing he had been identified, Madiba allegedly fled into the adjacent veld.
Authorities were alerted, and a drone was dispatched to aid in the search. The Hartbeespoort K9 Unit also participated, scouring the veld until late Tuesday night, yet Madiba was not caught during this attempt.
Further information suggests that Madiba might have had access to a cellphone while avoiding capture, although this detail remains unconfirmed.
Madiba escaped from Rooigrond Maximum Correctional Centre located near Mahikeng on Sunday, 6 September 2026, where he was serving a 20-year sentence for charges including robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping, possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition, and breaching parole conditions.
His escape led to an investigation by Correctional Services, resulting in notices of potential suspension being issued to eight officials.
MDNtv has reached out to the appropriate authorities for official confirmation and more information. Updates will follow pending the release of the joint statement from SAPS and the Department of Correctional Services.
