US Visa Process Becomes More Stringent for South African Applicants

Enhanced Visa Requirements for South African Applicants in the US

WASHINGTON: The U.S. government has reaffirmed its stance on rigorous visa screening, emphasizing that entry is a privilege rather than a guaranteed right.

Under the leadership of President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the administration stresses that national security, public safety, and the safeguarding of American interests are of utmost importance in its visa protocols.

According to information provided to MDN News, the US Department of State indicated that its embassies and consulates around the globe, including those in South Africa, are focused on comprehensive evaluations of each visa application.

“No visa is issued unless the applicant can credibly demonstrate that he or she meets all requirements under US law,” the department stated.

Furthermore, the department cautioned that visas may be revoked if there are signs of potential ineligibility, threats to public safety, or other relevant circumstances.

Visa bonds of up to $20,000

In its immigration enforcement efforts, the State Department has rolled out a Visa Bonds Programme targeting specified countries.

Through this initiative, applicants who qualify for B-1/B-2 visitor visas might need to secure a bond valued at up to $20,000 prior to visa approval.

The department explained that this programme aims to promote adherence to US immigration regulations, protect American citizens, and conserve taxpayer funds.

A pilot involving 5,000 travellers issued visas with bonds reportedly achieved a compliance rate of 98%, with travellers returning within their designated stay periods.

They noted ongoing monitoring of visa overstay statistics and continuous evaluation of the list of countries subject to bond mandates.

African visa processing centralised

Moreover, the US government has reorganized standard visa processing within sub-Saharan Africa to roughly 20 designated regional hubs.

These adjustments, which are effective as of August 1, are intended to enhance screening methods and better align diplomatic resources with US national interests.

Key processing centres now include the US embassies in Cape Town and Johannesburg, along with facilities in Accra, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Lagos, Kampala, Kigali, Luanda, and other locations across Africa.

Visa applicants are typically required to submit applications at the designated location serving their respective countries.

Students face social media checks

In addition, the department revealed that students and exchange visitor applicants in the F, M, and J visa categories will undergo thorough vetting that includes an examination of their online activities.

Applicants will be asked to set their social media profiles to “public” to assist in evaluating their eligibility for entry into the United States.

The department reminded that foreign nationals, including students, violating US laws may face visa denial, cancellation, or deportation.

US raises concerns over South African policies

The visa announcement coincides with ongoing diplomatic discussions between Washington and Pretoria.

US Ambassador to South Africa Christopher Landau Bozell engaged in a candid conversation with International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola regarding mutual interests and policy differences.

On matters related to other African nations using South African passports for US visa access, the State Department expressed its apprehensions but refrained from specific comments, suggesting that it was up to South Africa to address the situation.

The White House is concentrating on other policy matters.

The Trump administration has articulated concerns regarding South African practices related to equal opportunity, land expropriation without compensation, and what it calls race-based incitement to violence.

The US Department of State encouraged prospective applicants to check travel.state.gov or the relevant US embassy or consulate website for the most up-to-date visa information, processing details, and policy changes.
