Ghana and Columbus Partner to Open U.S. Job Opportunities for Ghanaian Nurses

Empowering Ghanaian Nurses: Ghana and Columbus Unite for U.S. Job Prospects

OHIO: The government of Ghana has entered into a new agreement with Columbus, Ohio, which focuses on generating job opportunities for qualified Ghanaian nurses and other healthcare professionals in the United States.

This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formalized by the Ministries of Health and Labour, Jobs and Employment of Ghana after several months of technical negotiations with US officials.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh stated that this agreement aims not only to streamline international recruitment but also to safeguard the rights, wellbeing, and professional interests of Ghanaian healthcare workers.

Modern Ghana

The initiative will create a framework for the ethical recruitment and placement of Ghanaian health professionals, especially nurses, into job openings in Columbus and potentially across the broader US healthcare sector.

“The MoU goes beyond recruitment,” Akandoh explained, emphasizing the need for deployment schemes to protect the rights and welfare of Ghanaian health professionals.

Pathway to US Careers for Nurses

This agreement is set to provide a clearer pathway for qualified Ghanaian nurses aiming to enter the US healthcare system, where foreign-trained nurses typically face requirements related to professional licensing, credential verification, immigration, and employment.

Current international recruitment initiatives indicate that Ghanaian nurses seeking jobs in the United States must navigate qualification verifications, meet nursing board standards, and obtain the right immigration status before they can practice.

Thus, this new accord between Ghana and Columbus aims to furnish a government-backed structure for recruitment, alleviating the burden on individual health professionals to self-navigate complex international recruitment processes.

Strengthening Accra-Columbus Relations

This program also builds on the established sister-city relationship between Accra and Columbus, as well as Ghana’s Labour Exchange Programme.

The Ghanaian government has stated that this partnership aims to create reliable and respectable international job prospects while ensuring that recruitment aligns with Ghana’s Migration Policy and global standards.

Modern Ghana

As Ghana actively seeks out international employment avenues for its healthcare workforce, the agreement follows a prior effort where, in 2025, the Ghana Health Ministry initiated recruitment for experienced nurses to work in Grenada as part of a different bilateral deal.

Implications for Nurses

It’s important to note that the signing of this MoU does not guarantee automatic job placements or visas for all Ghanaian nurses.

Specific measures still need to be established, covering factors like recruitment protocols, eligibility criteria, professional licensing, employment contracts, and immigration processes.

However, for nurses, this opportunity may offer a more organized and transparent method for pursuing employment abroad, potentially lowering the risks tied to unregulated international recruitment.

The Ghanaian government is committed to continuing its efforts to forge partnerships that present healthcare professionals with respectable job opportunities beyond the nation’s borders.

This development is likely to draw considerable interest from Ghanaian nurses who are in search of international career paths, particularly in light of the ongoing demand for qualified healthcare workers in various segments of the US healthcare system.
