Acclaimed South African artist, MUSA, has embarked on a new journey with his latest album, Uhambo. Released under David Gresham Records, this album showcases an intricate blend of Afro-pop and soul. It delves into themes of love, relationships, personal development, and the significant moments that influence MUSA’s life, while allowing him the freedom to navigate various sounds and emotions.
Instead of adhering to a single musical style, Uhambo reflects life’s unpredictable nature. Each song adds to an overarching narrative crafted from diverse experiences and contemplative moments. MUSA emphasizes that the essence of movement is key to the album’s message. “It’s a journey, it takes you wherever you want to go, because the album doesn’t sound the same,” he notes.

This album marks a significant evolution in MUSA’s artistic expression. With over ten years in the music business, he approaches Uhambo with newfound depth, reflecting on the series of experiences that have defined both his personal and professional life. Instead of focusing on a singular phase, the album encompasses the many paths that have led him to his current position.
<p“It’s more grown, and it tells the different journeys I’ve travelled to get to where I am now,” MUSA states.
This transformation is evident in the album’s varied production and emotional range, providing MUSA the opportunity to showcase different facets of his artistry. While the album is rooted in Afro-pop and soul, it avoids feeling restricted to a single sound. The final result is a collection that embodies movement, feeling, and exploration, while still retaining the soulful essence fundamental to MUSA’s music.
The process of creating Uhambo has also played a crucial role in its evolution. Recorded at David Gresham Records over a duration of approximately six to seven months, this project brought MUSA together with an array of collaborators, including the Soweto Gospel Choir, Thapelo Esua, Lawi, Bongani, and Maraza. Collaborating within DGR’s Woodmead studio complex exposed him to novel creative perspectives and songwriting partnerships.
<p“It was a different experience. I’ve worked with different people in terms of songwriting. Best way to explain it, it was fun,” MUSA mentions.
Uhambo adds to a rich discography that commenced with MUSA’s win on Idols SA in 2013. Since then, he has put out four studio albums: The Dream (2013), Mr Serious (2016), MUSA (2018), and Backroom (2022). His career has earned him a SATMA Award and nominations at the South African Music Awards and Metro FM Awards, alongside achieving multiplatinum sales.
He has collaborated with artists including Ntsika Ngxanga of The Soil, Kwesta, the Jaziel Brothers, and producer Lawrence Matshiza, while also honoring influential figures such as Hugh Masekela, Tshepo Tshola, and his late mentor Robbie Malinga.
Through Uhambo, MUSA encapsulates his current state while leaving room for future developments. The album signifies an artist who is welcoming growth, artistic freedom, and an expansive musical identity, as he continues to forge his legacy.
