South African maskandi musician Skhanga has released his latest album, Zikhonkotha Ehambayo. This eight-track collection delves into themes of love, pride, resilience, legacy, and community through the lens of maskandi storytelling.
The title of the album draws from the isiZulu phrase Zikhonkotha ehambayo, which translates to “they bark at a moving one.” This idiom likens critics to dogs barking at a car in motion, highlighting the negativity often targeted at those who pursue their goals. The core message emphasizes the importance of staying focused and not allowing detractors to derail one’s progress.
This principle underpins Skhanga’s new work. Through its eight tracks, the album reflects on his heritage while showcasing the resolve required to move forward in spite of external noise. The fusion of traditional maskandi elements with modern sounds results in a project that honors Skhanga’s origins while confidently embracing his future.
Zikhonkotha Ehambayo features contributions from Shenge Wasehlalankosi, MaGumede, Nzuzo wezihlabani, KaMaphanga, Yolokazi, Nkosazane Minnie, Londeka Shangase, and Thembani. Each artist provides a unique viewpoint that enhances the album’s exploration of identity, relationships, and collective experiences.
Central to the album is the pivotal track “Sine Pride,” which features Shenge Wasehlalankosi and MaGumede. The title, which means “We Have Pride,” serves as an optimistic homage to identity, success, and self-empowerment.
In this song, Skhanga motivates his audience to appreciate their personal journeys and to embrace their identities with pride. The contributions from Shenge Wasehlalankosi and MaGumede add further resonance, reinforcing a narrative rooted in cultural pride, strength, and communal assurance.
As a whole, Zikhonkotha Ehambayo and the track “Sine Pride” exemplify an artist dedicated to progression. Skhanga is aware of the criticism that may accompany advancement, but opts to continue his journey, carrying forward his culture and identity.
