Inside Pollsmoor: Monique Muller’s Eye-Opening Account of Life Behind Bars
Monique Muller, who was once involved with television figure Katlego Maboe, has shared her troubling experiences involving alleged mistreatment, cramped conditions, and inadequate living situations during her nearly three-week stay at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre in October 2025.
In an interview with Sunday World, Muller recounted that her arrest occurred after she accepted a ride home following a night out. The vehicle was stopped by metro police, who found a gun positioned under the driver’s seat, leading to the arrest of everyone in the car. She asserted that the firearm was not hers and that the charges were ultimately dismissed.
Muller claimed that about 90 women were crammed into a single cell with only one toilet and a nonfunctional shower. She also stated that during her detention, they were permitted outside for a mere 15 minutes on two occasions, in addition to facing difficulties accessing phone services.
She recounted alarming scenarios, such as a woman purportedly giving birth within the confines of a cell, another prisoner suffering the loss of a finger due to being bitten, and a detainee being violently attacked without prompt action from correctional staff.
Moreover, Muller asserted that an injured inmate endured a three-day wait for medical care and that prison guards threatened her with punishment for voicing her concerns about the living conditions.
The Department of Correctional Services has categorically denied her claims, labeling them as “completely fallacious.” The department insists that adequate healthcare, safety, and monitoring protocols are in effect.
Muller, who has a son with Maboe, has also claimed that inaccurate reports regarding her arrest have been weaponized against her amid their ongoing custody battle.
In 2020, Muller and Maboe were in the news due to public allegations of cheating and domestic violence, which Maboe refuted. In 2022, a court in Cape Town exonerated him from any misconduct claims.
The particular incidents that Muller described have yet to be independently confirmed.
