South African artist Makhadzi has spoken out regarding the contentious Botswana performance issue, stressing that she was never contracted to perform at a proposed event set up by Gilbert Promotions and did not receive any payment.
This statement follows the Limpopo-born artist spending three days in Botswana amid a legal clash with local promoter Gilbert Seagile, leading to her travel documents being withheld.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, Makhadzi Entertainment stated that the singer had urgently approached the Botswana court after her travel documents were confiscated.
Her management confirmed that the documents were returned following diplomatic talks between the governments of Botswana and South Africa, aided by the Limpopo provincial government.
Makhadzi distances herself from Botswana show
The artist’s team specifically addressed the planned performance organized by Gilbert Promotions, clarifying that she was never booked for the show and received no payment.
This clarification is crucial since the conflict reportedly revolves around an alleged arrangement for a One Woman Show slated for 12 September 2026.
As reported by The Botswana Gazette, Seagile claimed that Makhadzi did not fulfill the proposed engagement, causing financial losses and damage to his reputation. He reportedly sought P500,000 in compensation.
However, Makhadzi’s legal team disputed the validity of a binding agreement. Her lawyer, Bakotelo Moagisi Mmipi, reportedly contended that the conversations were about a potential collaboration rather than an official booking.
The claims made by the promoter and the singer’s stance have yet to be reconciled publicly.
Travel documents returned after court proceedings
Makhadzi’s conflict with the promoter escalated after an urgent court order restricted her from leaving Botswana.
The singer later sought help during a social media livestream, expressing that she felt harassed and was being exploited.
Her team confirmed that the travel documents were returned following swift court actions and diplomatic negotiations.
Makhadzi expressed gratitude to the governments of Botswana and South Africa, the Limpopo Premier, and the provincial government for their support.
She also thanked her attorneys and her fans in Botswana for their loyalty throughout the situation.
Makhadzi’s Album release postponed
Meanwhile, Makhadzi’s management has announced that her eagerly awaited album will now debut on 27 November instead of the previously planned 13 November 2026.
Her One Woman Show at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane is still set for 24 December 2026.
The artist expressed her appreciation for her supporters’ patience and stated that she is excited to share her new music with them.
