South African Music Icon Winnie Khumalo Dies at 51

South African musician and actress Winnie Khumalo has passed away at 51 following a short illness. Her family confirmed that she was taken to the hospital on Tuesday, where she was declared dead.

Khumalo’s sister, Tshepi Rakeepile, shared:
“She suffered a short illness. Just when we thought she was getting better, she woke up feeling unwell. Her daughter Rethabile took her to the hospital, where she was declared dead.”

Born on 20 July 1973 in Soweto, Khumalo began her music career at 15, releasing iconic albums like Hey Laitie and Tshina Tshina. She was also a beloved actress, appearing in TV series such as Muvhango and Mponeng.

A devoted mother, she leaves behind her two children, Rethabile and Thando. Funeral details will be shared by her family in due course.

Khumalo’s legacy as a pioneer in music and television will continue to inspire generations.
