Actor Mahlatse shuts down rumours about his sexuality
Actor Mahlatse Moropo from Skeem Saam has addressed rumors regarding his sexuality, which surfaced after the Basadi in Music Awards earlier this month.
Moropo, who plays Letetswe Kunutu on the popular SABC1 series, also works as a dancer, choreographer, and voice-over artist.
In an upcoming episode of Sunday World Engage, the star from Limpopo clearly stated that the speculation is unfounded.
“No, no, no, no, I am not gay,” he asserted.
The discussion emerged after Moropo made a striking appearance on the red carpet, donning outfits that ignited discussions about masculinity, self-expression, and African fashion.
Although he is aware of the comments circulating, the actor emphasized that he won’t let it affect him.
“I’ve learnt not to care about what the next person says. I am a never-mind type of person. If it doesn’t bring me money, I don’t care,” he elaborated.
“If you give attention to what people are saying, you will die mentally. Some people have even [taken their own lives] because of social media. I do my own thing, I live my life, I am a creative, and I don’t owe anyone explanations.”
Moropo disclosed that he has turned down requests to sit on podcasts to address the rumors, believing that it would give others control over his narrative.
“That would be giving people the power to control me into admitting something I’m not. I don’t see the need,” he explained.
He also mentioned that his partner has been very supportive during this time. “I was speaking to my partner, and she asked how I felt about the comments.
And I told her, ‘absolutely nothing.’ I did all of that intentionally, right down to the outfits. I went with the drama,” he chuckled.
Despite facing backlash, Moropo insists that he won’t scale back on his creativity or unique fashion choices.
“I live my life. I’m not here to explain myself,” he concluded.
