Junior Khanye has provided a harsh critique of the recent Soweto Derby, remarking that Orlando Pirates appeared “robotic” while Kaizer Chiefs executed their strategy with precision in the 1-1 stalemate.
During an appearance on iDiski TV, Khanye noted that Chiefs entered the match with a focused intent—to disrupt the flow of play for Pirates—and successfully achieved that.
“Kaizer Chiefs wanted to disturb Orlando Pirates, and they did exactly that. Honestly, the reflection of the game is in the result,” he stated.
The former winger highlighted a strategic change from Amakhosi, who veered away from their typical attacking formation, opting instead to bolster their midfield with three central players to counteract the strengths of Pirates.
“They realised Pirates are dangerous in midfield. Playing three there made it difficult for Rele to play,” Khanye elaborated, specifically mentioning Relebohile Mofokeng.
He commended Chiefs for their character and discipline, particularly given their strong form stemming from a six-match unbeaten streak.
However, while Chiefs garnered praise, Pirates’ players faced criticism. Khanye pointed out Mofokeng and Oswin Appollis for their disappointing performances in this crucial encounter.
“This is a game for big players… some Pirates players were robots. I’m very disappointed,” he expressed.
Khanye noted that Mofokeng tends to falter under pressure in crucial derby matches, while Appollis did not manage to make a significant impact.
Even Tshepang Moremi, who had to leave the game early due to injury, did not affect the match before his departure.
“I always say that Rele struggles in games like this, especially the derby,” added the former Chiefs midfielder.
“Appollis was also not that much in the game and Moremi, unfortunately he got injured but even the 15, 20 minutes he played, he was not in the game.”
Despite the critique, the outcome leaves Pirates at the top of the Betway Premiership with 59 points, while Chiefs sit in third place with 47.
