The UnKut Hiphop Awards are returning for their 2025 edition after a break, with a focus on their original purpose: championing and promoting Kenyan hip hop. This year’s awards, themed “Africa’s Hip Hop Lives Here,” will revisit their roots, emphasizing the dynamic rap scene that has gained traction and influence throughout Kenya.
This revival is timely, as the local hip hop scene flourishes in the digital realm, primarily due to the energy of the youth. Despite this growth, the industry continues to grapple with various structural challenges. The UnKut Awards strive to create a professional setting that highlights talent, amplifies voices, and solidifies hip hop’s significance as a cultural entity beyond just music.
The awards have consistently demonstrated an ability to identify and support artists who achieve significant success. Notable past winners include:
-
Wakadinali – honored in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2023, they are currently the most streamed Kenyan hip-hop artists on Spotify, with over 46 million streams.
-
Khaligraph Jones – received the 2020 Honorary Award and was the 2023 winner, maintaining his status as a leading figure in Kenyan music.
-
Trio Mio – awarded Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2021, he subsequently collaborated with international musicians.
-
Trailblazing female artists such as Silverstone Barz and Femi One, both past awardees, continue to shape the landscape of female rap in the region.
This year introduces a collaboration with Kijivu Solutions, a marketing agency in Nairobi with experience in partnerships like Betika Kenya and the Burger & Pizza Festival. Together, UnKut and Kijivu intend to enhance the awards experience, focusing on branding and activations.
