US-Senegalese musician Akon has become a trending topic again following the emergence of some of his past comments regarding South Africa. This renewed focus comes just as the artist hinted at a potential stop in the country during his upcoming tour.
During a 2022 appearance on Vlad TV, Akon discussed race relations in South Africa in response to Kanye West’s contentious “White Lives Matter” T-shirt. He expressed his views on what he described as “reverse racism” occurring within the nation.
“This is a true story,” he remarked. “Since the power has been taken over, the government is 90% black running it. And the white folk are screaming about equality, saying, ‘It’s not fair.’ So exactly what is happening in America is happening in South Africa.”
He added with a laugh, “White Lives Matter – in South Africa 100%. Kanye got the right shirt in the wrong country.”
Akon also shared that he had created a song about Nelson Mandela but missed the opportunity to meet the iconic leader, stating, “I would have loved to.”
As he hints at new tour locations, Akon is encouraging fans to suggest countries he should visit. However, many South Africans have taken to his comments section, urging him to rethink performing in their nation, a response likely influenced by his earlier statements.
It remains uncertain whether Akon will include South Africa in his tour itinerary, but it is clear that his prior comments have not been overlooked by the public.
