Boohle: Amapiano’s Reigning Queen in the SA Hip Hop Scene

Boohle: The Voice Elevating Amapiano in South Africa's Hip Hop Landscape

The music scene in South Africa is significantly influenced by the rise of amapiano, a genre that is not only popular locally but is also gaining international recognition.

As amapiano flourishes, discussions about the status of hip-hop in South Africa have emerged, prompting debates among artists, fans, and industry professionals. Boohle, a significant figure in today’s music scene, recently shared her insights regarding this topic in an interview with Hype Magazine.

“There’s nothing wrong,” Boohle stated when questioned about the factors hindering South African hip-hop compared to amapiano. “With music it’s just seasonal. The piano is dominating right now because of social media, the trending sounds for dances online, so when people hear the music they immediately start wanting the songs.”

Her comments reflect a larger perspective on how the popularity of music genres can change over time. The interviewer drew parallels between the current global attention on amapiano and the relative quietness of hip-hop in the music industry. Rather than viewing hip-hop as fading, Boohle argued that musical trends are cyclic and heavily shaped by technology and cultural context.

The ascent of amapiano has been closely tied to its interaction with social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where its lively beats accompany numerous viral videos. Boohle noted that this online presence is crucial in determining which genres resonate with audiences today. Although hip-hop continues to showcase talented artists and notable tracks, it has not tapped into the same social media dynamics as effectively in recent years.

Nonetheless, her views serve as a reminder that music genres in South Africa tend to experience periods of resurgence. Hip-hop has enjoyed its own golden age in the country, with artists like Nasty C, Cassper Nyovest, and AKA leading the way. Boohle is optimistic that hip-hop can regain its prominence when the cycle shifts once more.

This dialogue sheds light on the intriguing landscape of South African music, with amapiano currently taking center stage globally and hip-hop maintaining its influence albeit at a quieter moment. For Boohle, it isn’t about rivalry but rather an illustration of music’s evolution. She believes both genres are integral to the industry, and their coexistence is beneficial, allowing each to thrive during its respective peak.
